R.Ashwath
of Chennai won the first LA Group FIDE rated open chess tournament by
scoring an impressive 10 points out of 11 rounds.When Purushothaman of
AP overstretched and lost against Ashwath in the 5th round, two other
youngsters VAV Rajesh of AP and Vishnu Prasanna of Chennai were in
lead. Ashwath joined the leaders in the 7th round , In the 9th round he
defeated VAV Rajesh , played a fine game in 10th round against Syed
Anwar of ICF and ended with a victory over Shyam Nikhil of Madurai in
the last and final round.
The
event attracted 155 players with the top seed K.Rathnakaran of Kerala .
Players from as far as Orissa, Arunachal Pradesh took part in this
event. The games were well fought and lot of youngsters overcame their
experienced and seeded opponents like P.Sumathi of Vellakovil drew with
Vinoth Kumar of Chennai in the 2nd rd , N.Lokesh of Hosur drew
T.Purushothaman of AP in th 3rd rd, Vishnu Prasanna of Chennai beat
Syed Anwar Shazuli of ICF and IM Laxman was beaten by VAV Rajesh of AP
. Round 5 saw the biggest upset of tournament with Vishnu Prasanna
defeating the top seed K.Rathnakaran of Southern Railway convincingly
and in the game between youngsters VAV Rajesh beat the 2nd seed Shyam
Nikhil of Madurai.
The
event's major sponsor Jenney club, made everyone happy with their
excellent hospitality. Refreshment like water , tea and coffee , Pepsi,
Miranda were given to the players during the rounds.The Chief guest on
the final day Rn.Pratap Gokuldas, Past District Governor,Rotary
Dist.3200, spoke on the occasion.The Guest of Honor
Ln.Vijayakumhar,Trustee,SNR Sons and Charities,Cbe appreciated the
Management of Jenney Club for providing an excellent venue and playing
conditions. Mr.Joseph Vincent distributed the prizes and all the guests
joined together to present the wonderful LA GROUP trophy to the
jubilant winner , R.Ashwath of Chennai.
